The Walt Disney Story (1994)

The Walt Disney Story (1994) is a home video release of the 22-minute film that played at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom from 1973 until 1992. At Disneyland, the film played in the Main Street Opera House and at the Magic Kingdom, the film played in the space currently occupied by the Town Square Theater (formerly, the Gulf Hospitality House).

The cover of the 1994 VHS release of The Walt Disney Stor. It is a photo of a young Walt Disney standing partway in a door frame. On the wall to the left of Walt Disney is a shadow of Mickey Mouse.

I have a copy of the 1994 home video release that I probably purchased at the Disney Store at our local mall. It’s been sitting on my shelves for almost three decades, so I decided to dust it off (literally) and try my hand at digitizing it. I’ve sat through One Man’s Dream at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on multiple occasions. It’s a must-do attraction for me. And I was surprised at the differences in the two productions.

VHS Back Cover

The back cover of The Walt Disney Story (1994) VHS. It is a sepia toned cover with a cartoon drawing of Mickety Mouse. Here is the text: For anyone who has ever "wished upon a star." The Walt Disney Story is an inspiration. Filled with rare footage, interviews and photographs, it tells the story of how Walt, with the help of his brother Roy, started out as an aspiring artist in Hollywood. From there, he went on to produce innovative TV programs and build his magical theme parks. The Walt Disney Story is truly an extraordinary tale; almost as extraordinary as the man himself!

It’s always fascinating to revisit pieces of Disney history that don’t get talked about as much, and The Walt Disney Story (1994) is one of those hidden gems. Seeing Walt in his own words—through vintage interviews, old photographs, and behind-the-scenes footage—reminds us just how much heart and vision he poured into everything he created. If you’re a fan of One Man’s Dream at Hollywood Studios, this earlier version offers a different, more intimate glimpse into Walt’s life and legacy. I’ve uploaded my digitized copy so you can experience it for yourself, whether it’s your first time watching or a nostalgic return.

Check out the video and let me know what you think. Have you seen The Walt Disney Story before? How do you think it compares to One Man’s Dream? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
