Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari: 75 Years of America’s First Theme Park Book

If you love Holiday World history, this book is basically a time machine with glossy pages. The “first theme park” debate often bounces between parks like Knott’s Berry Farm and Holiday World, largely because the term “theme park” didn’t really lock in until Disneyland changed the industry. But Holiday World has a strong case for being an early, fully themed destination because it began life as Santa Claus Land, which Holiday World’s own historical timeline traces back to 1946, and it grew through decades of expansion into the park we know today.

Either way, the real point is simple. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is an outstanding park in Santa Claus, Indiana, and it has earned its reputation the old-fashioned way, by steadily building a guest experience that rewards repeat visits and rewards people who care about the story behind the place.

Regardless, Holiday World is an amazing theme park in Southern Indiana that deserves attention. I visited Holiday World in 2016 as part of a roller coaster weekend that included King’s Island, Kentucky Kingdom, and Cedar Point. The first video on my channel featured Holiday World.

That’s why I could not wait to get my hands on Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari: 75 Years of America’s First Theme Park. The book is published by Indiana University Press and credits Jim Futrell, Ron Gustafson, Dave Hahner, Nell Hedge, and Leah Koch as authors, which is a strong mix for a park-history deep dive. And the “family story” angle is not just marketing copy. Holiday World emphasizes that it is still owned and operated by the Koch family, the same family that helped bring the park into existence. That continuity matters, because it’s rare in the theme park world. You can feel it in the way the park talks about its past, preserves its identity, and keeps the guest experience at the center of the conversation.

Was it the atmosphere, the coasters, the water park, or just the feeling that this place is doing things its own way? If you want to dig deeper, grab a copy of the book.
