Imagineering an American Dreamscape, a Book Review

Imagineering an American Dreamscape by Barry R. Hill, a Book Review

The history of Disney Parks and larger regional amusement parks, like Cedar Point and Six Flags, have been well-documented. But what about the other theme parks? The ones that helped usher in the idea of themed entertainment or were part of the 1970s amusement/theme park revival? How does the growth of regional theme parks fit into the landscape of the history of theme and amusement parks? With Imagineering an American Dreamscape: Genesis, Evolution and Redemption of the Regional Theme Park, author Barry Hill shares a well-written and well-presented history of America’s theme parks. One that is sure to intrigue and take you on a wonderful stroll down memory lane of your favorite local park. Or parks.

Why Do You Need to Read This Book?

Contrary to popular belief, theme parks didn’t start with Disneyland in 1955. The term theme park was born with the opening of Walt’s nascent park, but the idea of theme parks had existed in a few parks prior to Walt’s creation. Barry wastes no time jumping into the history of parks by exploring pre-Disneyland, Walt’s influences, and, then, the major players, like Angus Wynne, Busch, Randall Duell, and so many others.

I’ve been a Disney park fan for most of my life and a self-styled Disney historian since the mid-1990s. After being on an award-winning podcast for years and writing weekly histories of Disney, I started to wonder how we got to Disneyland and Walt Disney World. What about other world-class parks like Universal and Busch Gardens Tampa? Where did they start and how did parks change over the years?

And why do so many people know so little about theme park history?

Look at that: almost 100 pages dedicated to an index, notes, a bibliography, and other important background information!

If you’ve ever visited a Six Flags park, Cedar Point, Kings Island, Holiday World, Great America, Hersheypark…or so many others, then this book is a treat. Barry takes the history of theme parks seriously and offers a condensed story of how the parks came to be, evolved, survived, and, in some cases, quietly slipped away.

If anything, this book will afford Disney fans the opportunity to broaden their perspectives and understand the larger tapestry of theme parks that exist outside of Disney and Universal. For most of the parks presented, Barry takes us back in time to wander the opening season of the park to look at the design and early attractions. It really is a stroll down memory lane.

What’s Inside Imagineering an American Dreamscape?

Barry ruminates on the successes and failures of so many parks and the forces behind the parks. When Barry talks about Carowinds (Charlotte, NC), he shares the inside story of E. Pat Hall, the Charlotte-area business man who planned to bring a Disneyland-style resort to the booming city. Massive plans included a short-lived monorail and hotels. The looming energy crisis changed everything, as it did with Taft, Marriott, and other regional parks. Some survived, some were bought out, and some just languished.

Obviously, Barry can’t cover every park, but he does share the ones that influenced the themed industry more than others. My only complaint about the book relates to the lack of maps and photographs to illustrate the work. Barry addresses this in the book by directing readers to his website: Rivershore Creative.

Randall Duell and the Duell Loop: the Ultimate Theme Park Designer

We also get an inside look at some of the most important people in the theme park industry. Barry spends pages discussing Randall Duell, the architect responsible for the modern theme park. Duell was able to take the successes of Disneyland and translate them into early Six Flags parks. He became the most in-demand designer and is responsible for being able to integrate thoughtful design, architecture, and theming.

After the main sections of the book, Barry introduces us to Mel McGowan and Rick Bastrup. Both are McGowan is Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Storyland Studios; Bastrup is President and Head Designer of R&R Creative Amusement Designs. Both offer salient chapters on Duell and other theme park design legends. McGowan and Bastrup share the stories as fans and industry insiders.

In all honesty, Imagineering an American Dreamscape is almost the story of Randall Duell. The warp and weft of the theme park industry is ingrained with so many of Duell’s deft touches and ideas. I’m so glad Barry presented the book in this way.

So, yes, you should grab this book. And, yes, you will enjoy it. Barry has written a work on a staggering subject and he has distilled it to the most important concepts and people. You will learn something from Barry’s work, regardless of your prior theme park experiences.

What is your favorite regional park? Mine is Kings Island.

Six Flags Magic Mountain

George Visits Six Flags Magic Mountain

A few weeks ago, I spent one day at Knott’s Berry Farm, Disney California Adventure and Disneyland. Then I spend the next two days at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

There are FOUR coasters in this photo from the parking lot: Goliath, Superman, Twisted Colossus and Scream!

Why? Because Six Flags Magic Mountain boasts 19 roller coasters and they were hosting the American Coaster Enthusiasts convention. Plus, I’ve heard a lot of great things about Twisted Colossus. Would it live up to the hype?

Obviously, I rode a bunch of coasters (fifteen total) and I got to hang out with fellow coaster enthusiasts. Of the fifteen coasters, three turned out to be completely amazing and one of them might actually be in my top two, if not my favorite. It was very strange to run into filming locations from National Lampoon’s Vacation, but you can see how the park has grown and changed since the film was released. Also, the iconic Twisted Colossus, before it was reborn, was used in a variety of movies, television shows and commercials. Since you could see it from the parking lot, it was an ideal coaster to film.

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis at Six Flags over Georgia

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis at Six Flags over Georgia

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis is a dark ride that opened in the spring of 2017 at Six Flags over Georgia. The dark ride premiered in 2015 at Six Flags over Texas and SIx FLags St. Louis. I had the chance to see the Joker animatronic at IAAPA and it was incredibly impressive. Needless to say, I was looking forward to experiencing this without making a trip halfway across the country.

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis at Six Flags over Georgia Video:

Check out my spoiler-free review of the ride that includes some history and a look at the queue, including the Cyborg animatronic.

After the ride, you do see your score and you’re ranked within the vehicle and for the day. You’re also led through a DC gift shop and then into the blazing, hot Georgia sun. I do wish there were more shade canopies.

The Hall of Justice looks great and really draws your eye from various points in the Metropolis area.

Overall, it’s s fun dark ride and a much needed family experience for Six Flags over Georgia. I do wish that all the Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks would add more family-friendly attractions that could be enjoyed by people that don’t want to ride the coasters. Or aren’t tall enough. Most of the complaints I hear about the regional amusement parks center around there not being enough for families with pre-teens and Tweens to do.

Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman statues in the queue inside the Hall of Justice. How weird would it be to come to work every day and see a statue of yourself?

Have you had a chance to experience Justice League: Battle for Metropolis? Leave me a comment and let me know!

VR Drop Tower at Six Flags Over Georgia!

VR Drop Tower at Six Flags Over Georgia! Press Release

I’m always up for a new experience at a theme park. I loved the VR Coasters experience that I rode at FunSpot during IAAPA in 2015 and 2016. I think adding the virtual reality to the drop ride concept is a great next step. Except I’m not so sure about spiders…why did it have to be spiders?

Six Flags VR Coaster?

Sign me up!

I had the chance to experience the VR Coaster at IAAPA 2015 on the FunSpot Freedom Flyer. It was such an amazing experience that I knew it would revolutionize the industry. Six Flags just announced that they would be bringing online several VR Coasters throughout their different parks. The Dare Devil Dive Coaster at Six Flags over Georgia will feature the New Revolution Virtual Reality Coaster. This surprised me, at first, but made sense after thinking about the load and unload needs of the Dare Devil Dive Coaster and the Six Flags VR Coaster headset.

For the VR Coaster experience (or any of the Six Flags VR Coaster experiences), you’ll don a Samsung Gear VR Headset before the ride. When I rode the VR Coaster at Funspot, I chose to wear my glasses and the headset fit snuggly and didn’t bother me in the least. It was pretty amazing to sit on the coaster with the headset and see a completely different environment all around me.

North America’s First Virtual Reality Coaster Coming to Six Flags Over Georgia North America’s first virtual reality roller coaster (VR) is coming to Atlanta, as The New Revolution at Dare Devil Dive is set to debut at Six Flags Over Georgia. Using Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus, riders will become “co-pilots” on their own virtual fighter jets and be transported into a futuristic battle to save planet Earth from an alien invasion.
The New Revolution at Dare Devil Dive will feature:

  • The incredibly immersive world of virtual reality – straight up nearly 100 feet to the top of a towering skyscraper;
  • A 95 degree launch off the edge of a building – beyond vertical;
  • Darting between buildings and extreme aerial moves at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour;
  • Daring aerobatic maneuvers through three inversions and zero-gravity hills; and
  • An exhilarating battle sending you head over heels through 2,100 feet of twisted steel track to fight alien forces and save all mankind.

2016 Season Passholders will experience The New Revolution exclusively March 12 and 13 for opening weekend. The virtual reality coaster will open to the public on March 19 for a limited time only.

The integration I experienced was truly seamless and I never felt like I had motion-sickness at any time. You pull real Gs (based on the coaster) and the coaster environment is a perfect next step for VR. The Six Flags VR Coaster is going to blow people away.

When you move your head while wearing the Samsung Gear while riding the Six Flags VR Coaster, you get a complete panorama that moves with you.

I rode the Dare Devil Dive Coaster last season (2015) and enjoyed the experience, except for the load and unload. It seemed to add more than the length of the ride to make sure every person was loaded (I’m never going to knock safety). But the wait in the queue was fairly long and the addition of the VR headsets is just going to make it longer.

Overall, I loved the Dare Devil Dive Coaster. It’s very smooth and pulls Gs in all the right places. The initial ride of the 95-foot lift hill can be daunting, but the VR headsets should make it more enjoyable. It is a very short ride. A short but satisfying ride.

I’m very excited for this addition to the roller coaster industry and for virtual reality. It really works and I can’t wait to try out the New Revolution myself!
