Loki: Where Mischief Lies

Loki: Where Mischief Lies

Loki, as played by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel films, was an unexpected hero, or even an anti-hero across the cinematic universe. The Trickster God has legions of fans and there is a lot of excitement for the Loki series debuting with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service. I have high hopes for the series and the continuation of Marvel on Disney+.

Disney sent me a review copy of Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzie Lee. The book takes us to Loki’s late teen and early adult years in Asgard and his exploits with Amora, a sorceress-in-training. Loki and Amora find themselves in trouble and Amora is banished to Midgard, a realm that is almost devoid of magic.

Later, Loki is dispatched to Midgard to investigate a series of murders. It is a request borne of a secret society of people who know about the Nine Realms and the Asgardians. They call upon Odin for his assistance and Loki travels the Bifrost to Earth. During his time investigating the murders with the secret society, Loki learns more about himself and his future. Or his past. Not really sure…

The book looks at identity, from the eyes of a person that we come to know years later. Loki struggles with who is is and who he wants to be, all while fending off the pressure of his brother Thor and his father Odin. The first section of the book shares a Loki who aspires to be king of Asgard, like his father; a Loki that competes with and loves his brother, who seems to have a natural ability to lead. The familiar theme of disappointment from Odin runs rampant through the book and drives Loki’s decisions. Mackenzie intersperses loads of humor, especially the interplay between Loki and Thor.

The Question Has Plagued Us for Centuries

Loki: Where Mischief Lies is going to resonate with anyone searching out their own identity and path through life. The intended audience of the book are teens; Mackenzie Lee shows a deft understanding of young adults and their internal issues. The Trickster God comes to a few realizations in the book, leading to self-doubt and eventually awareness and acceptance.

This title is the first of a three-book series by Mackenzie Lee about heroes of the Marvel Universe. I’m glad to know that Disney and Marvel are going to release more books and I hope they offer more titles, especially ones with a social conscious. I’m glad to see positive characters that readers can identify with.

Also, the title is very clever!

I enjoyed the book, specifically the interplay between Loki, Thor and Amora. Those moments made it feel like it was truly part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The book did get a bit clunky when Loki arrives on Midgard, but picks up pace again. The developments between Amora and Loki are quite telling, but there is also a surprise of a second love interest that sheds a different light onto Loki. Young adults will enjoy the themes running throughout the book and fans of Loki will like the dip into his past and origin. It’s not really an origin story as much as an evolution of the character.

Marvel Avengers Endgame

Marvel Avengers Endgame

There’s no need for me to tell you to run out and buy a copy of Marvel Avengers Endgame, right? I saw Endgame twice in the theater and it still rocked me emotionally when I streamed the review copy Disney sent me on Movies Anywhere. There’s not much to say about the film, but I can discuss the bonus features featured on the blu-ray and digital download. You’ll need something to watch once the film is over…

Avengers Endgame BONUS MATERIAL

Digital Exclusive:
  • Steve and Peggy: One Last Dance – Explore Captain America and Peggy Carter’s bond, forged in moments from previous films that lead to a momentous choice in “Avengers: Endgame.”
Blu-ray & Digital:
  • Remembering Stan Lee – Filmmakers and cast honor the great Stan Lee in a fond look back at his MCU movie cameos. It’s hard to think about Stan Lee passing, but this is a warm and very humorous tribute to the man. I forgot some of these cameos!
  • Setting The Tone: Casting Robert Downey Jr. – Hear the tale of how Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Tony Stark in the original “Iron Man” — and launched the MCU. Sometimes I gorget that the entire 22 movie franchise started with this one film and finding the perfect actor for Iron Man. This is a well done look at how Robert Downey, Jr. was iron man.
  • A Man Out of Time: Creating Captain America – Trace the evolution of Captain America with those who helped shape the look, feel and character of this compelling hero. I enjoyed this extra because Cap is the hero inside of all of us, or the hero that we all want to be. He’s out shadowed by Iron Man, but there is something heartfelt in everything he does.
  • Black Widow: Whatever It Takes – Follow Black Widow’s journey both within and outside the Avengers, including the challenges she faced and overcame along the way. I wish they had been able to explore Natasha’s story in a full-length film, but this is a good look back at her story.
  • The Russo Brothers: Journey to Endgame – See how Anthony and Joe Russo met the challenge of helming two of the biggest films in cinematic history … back-to-back! Watching how the Russo Brothers brought these films to life is almost as overwhelming as the final battle in Endgame.
  • The Women of the MCU – MCU women share what it was like to join forces for the first time in an epic battle scene — and be part of such a historic ensemble. Strong women have always been central to the Marvel films.
  • Bro Thor – His appearance has changed but his heroism remains! Go behind the scenes to see how Bro Thor was created. Bro Thor…say no more!
  • Six Deleted Scenes – “Goji Berries,” “Bombs on Board,” “Suckiest Army in the Galaxy,” “You Used to Frickin’ Live Here,” “Tony and Howard” and “Avengers Take a Knee.”
  • Gag Reel – Laugh along with the cast in this epic collection of flubs, goofs and gaffes from set.
  • Visionary Intro – Intro by directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
  • Audio Commentary – Audio commentary by directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The bonus features were solid, but they’re not the reason you’re going to buy Endgame. I enjoyed the extras, especially the ones about Stan Lee, Captain America and Black Widow; there was a lot of thought given to the characters and the actors chosen. The Gag Reel and Six Deleted Scenes were surprisingly disappointing. Overall, you’re going to want a copy on blu-ray or digital download so you can watch it over and over. Because you love the Avengers 3000!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, blu-ray review

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, blu-ray review

You’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, right? And you don’t need me to tell you how fantastic the film is. But, should you buy a copy of the blu-ray release of the second installment of the Guardians franchise?

Of course, if you’ve seen the movie and you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then you need to buy it. The film is gorgeous and sounds amazing, especially with the music.

But what about the bonus features?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Bonus Features

The blu-ray release has more than 80 minutes of bonus features and I watched them all with my thirteen year-old son. I was surprised, because he rarely wants to watch the extra features, but, he loved them! He thought they were funny and added a lot to the overall viewing experience.

Here’s  list of the bonus features:

The Making of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” – A four-part, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, done in the style of classic-rock album liner notes.
Visionary Intro – Director James Gunn provides context on how he continues and expands the storylines of these beloved characters in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
Guardians Inferno Music Video – Join David Hasselhoff and special guests for a galactic retro dance party.
Gag Reel – Laugh out loud at all the hilarious off-script shenanigans and bloopers that took place on the set of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” featuring all your favorite Guardians.
Four Deleted Scenes – Check out four specific scenes that had to be cut from the film, including two extended scenes and two deleted scenes.
Audio Commentary – Check out a special narration of the film by director James Gunn, who guides fans through an inside look at the making of the movie.

I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes features, especially the ones that showed the actors outisde of their costumes. Sometimes the differences were stunning.

It starts with a doodle and the rest is film history. Audiences will be given the option to view 5-6 layers of specific scenes in the film. Scenes include “Eclector Escape,” “Gamora and Nebula,” and “Rocket and Ravagers.”
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! (Digital Exclusive) – Get an exclusive sneak peek inside the most anticipated ride at Disneyland, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!. We’ll dig into the concepts and inspiration, and talk about what it took to bring the most epic ride at Disneyland to life.

I haven’t watched the digital extra features, but I will Sometimes, I run out of time to watch everything before the review is due.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not have resonated as well as the first film, but it’s every bit as funny and charming; mores since we’re very familiar with the characters at this point.

I can’t wait to see how the Guardians are pulled into the Civil War films.

Night Night, Groot Picture Book, a review!

Night Night, Groot Picture Book, a review!

It’s baby Groot!

Check out this cute picture book from Marvel featuring baby Groot, Rocket Raccoon and so many more of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers. Night Night, Groot was written by Brendan Deneen and illustrated by Cale Atkinson.

The book is really cute and is perfect for the Groot and Marvel fan in your house, no matter their age.

From the blurb:

It’s been a long day for baby Groot and he’s ready to be tucked in for bed. Just as his eyes start to close, Rocket Raccoon bursts onto the scene! Groot can’t go to sleep yet, there’s a whole galaxy that needs to be defended and they must work together to save the day! Then maybe, just maybe, Groot will finally get the rest he deserves!

The art style was charming and features many of the Marvel heroes and villains. It’s geared towards the under-five set, as a lap story time or bedtime story. Kindergartners and children just starting to read on their own will find it a satisfying story. The rhyming is fun, as well. Cale Atkinson does a great job of translating the Marvel action to the page without feeling violent or sacrificing the art. I read it to a friend’s child (four year-old) and he loved it. I think we read the book five or six times. As a grown-up, there were more than enough details and Easter eggs that kept the book entertaining. Of course, we had to talk about what the heroes were doing throughout the book.

Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy are going to love the book, especially families.

Art of Big Hero 6 Review

The Art of Big Hero 6 Book Review

The Art of Big Hero 6 is a large-format Chronicle Book written by Jessica Julius. It was released a few weeks before the film but I didn’t pick up my copy until recently (because I really hate spoilers of any kind). With the release of Big Hero 6 on blu-ray (and its Oscar win), it’s a great time to look at the book.

Big Hero 6 quickly became one of my favorite animated films, if not one of my favorite Disney films. My other favorites have always been Lilo & Stitch and The Incredibles, which both share themes of family. When we got our download code for the film, we easily watched it five or six times before we got our blu-ray copy.

Even just watching the trailers before Big Hero 6’s release, it was obvious that Baymax was going to be an amazing character and this book does go into some great detail about the creation and evolution of everyone’s favorite healthcare robot.

The Art of Big Hero 6

The Art of Big Hero 6 is a quick read compared to some of the other Chronicle Art of… titles, but it still offers the beauty and insight of the other books. Big Hero 6 was one of the more gorgeous films, not only because of the increases in technology, but because of the care that was taken in crafting the world. They took the best of Tokyo and the best of San Francisco to make San Fransokyo.

Almost 50% of the book was dedicated to the creation of San Fransokyo, which does show how important the backgrounds are for the entire film. There are some jaw-droppingly gorgeous paintings and computer illustrations that show the evolution of the city in the project. Even though many of the paintings are fully digital, they still look like watercolors and ink drawings. Also included are photos that the filmmakers took of San Francisco and Tokyo to use as reference footage. One more interesting section was how they made San Fransisco look like it slowly evolved with larger stylings of Tokyo culture and iconic buildings. Time is spent on individual pieces of furniture and room layouts, as well, further adding to the depth of the environment and the book.

The character development for BH6 was a large part of the title, as expected and took up the rest of the book. Since there were some changes made from the comic series, the artists showed the progression that was made to get the characters we see in the film.

Each character gets about three to four pages to themselves as well as parts that focus on how the characters work together, visually. One of the original designs for Hiro’s hero suit was red, but they changed it to purple to contrast with Baymax’s red hero suit.

Quote from John Lasseter about designing Hiro:
Hiro was a challenge because he’s a gangly, fourteen-year-old-boy genius. He needs to be appealing but not a cutesy kid. We found his design by studying young teenagers who are really brilliant in science or the arts, who are so utterly focused on their particular interests that dressing and combing their hair is an afterthought.

The section on Baymax is the largest and focuses on how long it took them to narrow down his shape and overall look. There are different illustrations for a few different Baymaxs. They all look similar but not as good as the one in the film. We also see a lot of the different suits they designed for Hiro and the design of Baymax’s robotic parts which helped to base the movements in reality. There’s even a page about Honey Lemon’s purse and how it works with exploded drawings.

The last few pages of the Art of Big Hero 6  book look at some things that didn’t quite make it: the Vanished Villains! A girl gang called the Fujitas, a tv host called Mr. Sparkles and the Bonsai Bombers!

Fans of Big Hero 6 are going to love this book. Animation historians will love it, especially since it’s a Marvel property done by Disney and very much acts like a Pixar film. Not quite an enigma, but close. The Art of Big Hero 6 is visually stunning and does offer insight into the filmmaker’s decisions about the movie making process. When you see how the characters diverged, it’s interesting to think of how different the movie would be.

I think you’re going to like this one; trust me, I’m a librarian.

Are you going to add the Art of Big Hero 6 to your collection?
