1985 Disney World Shopping Bag

1985 Disney World Shopping Bag

Running across rare items that were used daily and forgotten about are some of the true treasures of collecting. When I found a 1985 Disney World shopping bag in my collection, I couldn’t wait to share it.

Speaking of bags: I’ve seen countless videos and images from 1970s Walt Disney World that showed the iconic Mickey Mouse shopping bag and I can only image the treasure within.

The shopping bag is great, but I’m also loving that photo of the sign for Tinkerbell Toy Shop (yes, Disney used the wrong nomenclature for years). Check out the post of vintage photos from 1971 or 1972.

This is such an amazing graphic. Purple, pink, orange, and brown coloring shape the image with several icons. The copyright date is 1985 and this image perfectly represents the transition from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Let’s take a look at the representation of the Walt Disney World Icons, from top to the bottom.

  • First up are the fireworks, or nighttime spectacular. Actually, it was Fantasy in the Sky and ran from 1971 to 2003.
  • The spires of Cinderella Castle are next, which briefly eclipse
  • Spaceship Earth
  • The monorail is next, and it is the Mark IV Monorail which was at Disney World from 1971 until 1989
  • The paddle wheel is not the Liberty Belle Riverboat (née Richard F. Fowler), but it is the Empress Lilly Riverboat that was moored at the Disney Village Marketplace (the giveaway is the restaurant entrance that is shadowed in white to the left)

This cover from the 1977 Disney News offers a wonderful photo of the Empress Lilly. You can see the float dock on the right and the “entrance dock” or building to the left. Learn more about the Disney Village and the Empress Lilly, here.

Finally, we have a 3/4 view of Mickey Mouse and the traditional Walt Disney World logo.

What’s interesting is the tagline Together at Disney. The World’s Greatest Resort. Surprisingly, I don’t have a lot of items with this tagline on them. Are you familiar with it? Do you remember it?
