Moana Review (Blu-ray and Bonus Features)

If you didn’t get a chance to see Moana in the theaters, then it’s a great time to pick up the blu-ray release. Make sure to check out my Moana review  on Youtube that I’ve linked to below.

So, the film is truly gorgeous. It really shows the artistry that can be attained through modern computer animation. As expected, since Toy Story, each CG film has become even more beautiful and more lush. And with Moana, the effects of the hair and the sand are amazing. But the true star of the film really is the water.

Moana review

Well, and the music. You’re welcome

The film is a wonderful look at life in the Pacific islands and the cultures that exist there. The filmmakers take us into that world and really show us what it’s like to rely upon everything on the island and the sea.

Moana Review Continued

As I mentioned earlier, the music is fantastic. Overall I think I still enjoy the music from Frozen more but the songs in Moana have a more worldly view and instrumentation. Of course when you got the hype of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hamilton, how can you go wrong? Still the songs were very exciting and really add a lot to the film. You definitely need to buy the soundtrack as well.

Kakamora!

As I mentioned, the film is gorgeous and the only thing I felt lacking was just the overall characterizations. It just seem to get a little boring just watching Moana and Maui for the better part of the film. I’m not sure why, maybe it was because you knew what was going to happen. And the film does follow a lot of the same tropes of any Disney film.

Still, it is a great film and I think it’s one that everyone needs to add to their collection. It shows that even when Disney does something normal or regular, for them, it is still so much better than almost anything else that’s out there.
